Claiming an exceptional 2021-22 athletic year for Big Orange, Tennessee has claimed its first overall SEC All-Sports Championship, presented by USA Today Network.
The all-sports “overall” championship signifies Tennessee’s dominance this year in men’s and women’s sports among SEC schools.
USA Today Network also crowns the annual SEC All-Sports Champions for men’s and women’s sports separately. The Vols captured their first SEC Men’s All-Sports title since 2007-08, while the Ladies Vols finished second in the SEC Women’s All-Sports standings.
In the overall standings, factoring in the success of the men’s and women’s teams, Tennessee and Florida each finished with 154 points, but Tennessee’s overall percentage of .770 beat UF’s .740. Arkansas finished third overall with 124 points and a .62626 shooting percentage.
“This is such an exciting time to be a Tennessee Vol,” senior rising men’s basketball Josiah-Jordan James said. “We have a lot of different sports teams, but as student-athletes, we really are like one big team together. We all want to see each other succeed. best place in the world to learn, train, compete and develop as collegiate athletes.
Spanning all sports, Tennessee won five SEC team championships in 2021-22, first full academic year under Vice Chancellor/Athletic Director leadership dany white. Football, men’s basketball, and baseball each won their respective SEC Tournaments. Baseball also won the SEC regular season title, and the women’s swimming and diving team won its SEC championship meet, which it hosted.
“When I first came to Tennessee, I was told it was a program on the rise,” Tennessee senior pole vaulter and 2021-22 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee co-chair hannah jefcoat said. “I’d say the surge has happened, but we’re not done yet. We’ve worked hard to build a family atmosphere with our student-athletes, and that’s evident by the results we post as Lady Vols and GBO Vols!”
This is the second year USA Today Network has handed out the SEC All-Sports Awards.
Points are awarded based on the number of teams competing in a sport. A program’s total points are divided by the total number of teams competing in the sports the school sponsors, and that quotient ranks the teams in the USA Today Network SEC’s final all-sports standings.
The league office internally tabulated SEC All-Sports totals through the 1994-95 academic year. The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group presented the awards for the 1994-95 through 2010-11 seasons, and The Halifax Media Group and GateHouse Media presented the awards until USA Today Network began presenting the award before 2020-21.
