chicago cubs on the New York Yankees

Jameson Taillon threw a banger in Minnesota last time out, but he’s been excellent overall this year, posting a 2.73 ERA and a 1.01 whip en route to a 6-1 record for the first-place Yankees. Prior to his most recent start, Taillon went 8 innings twice in a row (with just 2 hits and no walks allowed in either start), and completed the required five innings in six consecutive starts (while recording the win in five from them) . Taillon has also been better at home this year, with his era nearly a run lower and his strikeout rate considerably higher at Yankee Stadium. On the other side of the ledger, Cubs starter Keegan Thompson started the year in good shape, but has slowed down noticeably of late, allowing 14 baserunners and 10 earned runs (covering just 8 1/3 innings) in his last two starts, including a dismal start on the road. in Baltimore last out where he allowed 3 home runs. With the Yankees currently 25-7 at home, and the money line for this game being Yankees -240, I think +130 is an attractive price for Taillon, who plans to throw reasonably deep in the game and has an excellent chance to walk away with a Lead. He’s also helping the cause with the Yankees’ excellent bullpen led by Clay Holmes, who has allowed only one run all year (28 2+ innings).

Philadelphia Phillies against the Arizona Diamondbacks (fanuel)

(Ranger Suarez vs. Kyle Nelson)

The Phillies come into this game red hot, winners of 9 straight games. One of those games included a strong 7-inning effort from outfielder Suarez, who hasn’t pitched very well this year but is about to get better and may have bounced back with that fine effort. This is a bullpen game for the visiting Diamondbacks, as Kyle Nelson will only pitch an inning or two as a starter. With the Phillies in good shape right now (covering the run line in 7 of their last 8 wins) and Ranger Suarez hopefully in the process of turning things around, it seems like good value at the price of a coin.

texas rangers on the Chicago White Sox

Michael Kopech has been one of the most notable pitches this season as he moves into the White Sox rotation after pitching primarily out of the bullpen last year. Kopech has also been throwing deeper into games recently, going 6-plus innings in four of his last five starts, while posting wins in two of his last three starts (including a hefty +265 last Tuesday). The only real hiccup he’s had recently was in Toronto, which of course is not an easy place. Kopech has also been a little better at home this year, throwing at a 1.61 era and a 0.75 whip at US Celluar Field, as opposed to his 2.35 era and a 1.17 whip on the road. He also helps his case that the visiting Texas Rangers are just 13-21 against RHP (compared to 14-10 against LHP). Meanwhile, Rangers starter Jon Gray hasn’t been ready, allowing 5 earned runs in two of his last three starts. Great price here for the excellent Kopech, who is hoping to deliver another excellent performance today.

Cincinnati Reds on the St. Louis Cardinals

(Graham Ashcraft vs. Dakota Hudson)

Hard to resist getting +0.5 runs to par with Graham Ashcraft, who has allowed a grand total of just one earned run in his last three starts (covering 19.1 innings). He even seems to be improving his control recently, walking two batters apiece in his first couple of starts, followed by one walk and then zero walks in his last two starts. This will also be the first time the Cardinals have seen Ashcraft, so he may have an advantage there, particularly the first time or two in the order before Cardinal hitters can adjust. Good value in what appears to be a tight, low scoring ball game.

  • Cincinnati Reds F5 +0.5, +100 on the St. Louis Cardinals
