NBC News TODAY Introduces Minimally Invasive Intracept®

MINNEAPOLIS, June 13, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Relievant Medsystems today shared that the company’s innovative treatment for chronic low back pain, the Intracept Procedure, was featured on NBC’s TODAY this morning. The full segment can be seen here.

“This is an exciting story, not only for the patients I have treated, but also for the millions of chronic vertebrogenic low back pain patients who will now learn about the Intracept Procedure,” said Kiran V. Patel, MD, Director, Neurosurgical Pain at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, and who also appears in the TODAY show segment. “As a physician, I hope this story will expand patient awareness and access to this groundbreaking procedure.”

The minimally invasive Intracept procedure is the only FDA-approved treatment for chronic vertebrogenic low back pain. It uses targeted radiofrequency energy to prevent the basivertebral nerve from transmitting pain signals to the brain. The procedure is usually done in an outpatient surgery center and takes about an hour. Patients go home the same day and most patients experience minimal pain after the procedure and generally quick recovery times. People often begin to experience pain relief within two weeks of the Intracept Procedure.

Of the 30 million people in the US with chronic low back pain, 1 in 6 are likely to have vertebrogenic pain, which is a different type of chronic low back pain caused by damage to the endplates, the interface between the disc and the vertebral body. Patients typically have pain in the center of their lower back, which is worse when they bend over, sit for long periods of time, or when they are active. A physician can confirm that a patient’s pain is vertebrogenic by observing Modic changes, a biomarker seen on standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that indicates inflammation in the vertebral endplate.

“We are delighted every time we hear about a patient experiencing relief with the Intracept procedure and appreciate Dr. Patel’s work,” said Tyler Binney, president and CEO of Relievant Medsystems. “The Intracept Procedure has changed the lives of patients suffering from chronic vertebrogenic low back pain. We are delighted that this story is raising more awareness of this condition and the long-term relief that many have experienced after their Intracept Procedure.”
