Bypoll Vote Counting Today: Votes will be counted in 3 Lok Sabha and 7 assembly seats today.

New Delhi:
Votes will be counted today in three Lok Sabha and seven assembly seats in five states and Delhi, where partial votes were held on June 23. Tripura Prime Minister Manik Saha is among the key candidates in the assembly by-election.

Here’s your 10-point cheat sheet for this great story:

  1. Tripura secondary surveys were carried out in the seats: Agartala, Jubarajnagar, Surma and Town Bardowali. Rajya Sabha MP Mr. Saha, who stood as the Town Bardowali candidate, needs to win to continue as Chief Minister.

  2. Lok Sabha by-elections were held in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur and Azamgarh, and in Punjab’s Sangrur.

  3. The other seats where secondary assembly votes were held were Rajinder Nagar in Delhi, Mandar in Jharkhand’s Ranchi district and Atmakuru in Andhra Pradesh.

  4. In Rampur, the BJP sent Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi, who recently joined the party. Asim Raja, chosen by Azam Khan, is the candidate of the Samajwadi Party. The Mayawati Bahujan Samaj Party did not compete in Rampur.

  5. The Azamgarh seat saw a triangle contest between BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’, an actor and singer from Bhojpuri; Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and Shah Alam of the Bahujan Samaj Party, also known as Guddu Jamali.

  6. In Punjab, the AAP sent Gurmail Singh, the Sangrur district of the party in charge; the main congressional opponent, former Dhuri MLA Dalvir Singh Goldy, while the BJP candidate is former Barnala MLA Kewal Dhillon, who joined the party on June 4.

  7. Kamaldeep Kaur, sister of Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in the murder case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, was sent by Shiromani Akali Dal. Akali’s Amritsar boss Simranjit Singh Mann is also in the contest.

  8. The by-election in Jharkhand was necessitated after the disqualification of MLA Bandhu Tirkey after he was convicted in a corruption case. The Congress nominated his daughter, Shilpi Neha Tirkey, as the joint candidate of the JMM-led ruling coalition, while the BJP nominated former MLA Gangotri Kujur for the seat. Independent candidate Dev Kumar Dhan, backed by Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), also contested Jharkhand’s secondary polls.

  9. In Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar, AAP’s Durgesh Pathak is likely to have a close competition with BJP’s Rajesh Bhatia, who had been a councilor for the area. The congressional candidate is Prem Lata.

  10. The by-election in Andhra Pradesh was held to fill a vacancy after Industries Minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy died in February. His younger brother, Vikram Reddy, is the ruling YSR Congress candidate. The BJP candidate is G Bharat Kumar Yadav.
