Two join Harvard Law School and two move up

As the academic year draws to a close, four professors have joined or moved up the ranks of the Harvard Law School faculty. Harvard Law welcomes jurist and philosopher Ryan D. Doerfler ’13, currently a professor of law at the University of Chicago, and Jared Ellias, currently the Bion M. Gregory Chair in Business Law and faculty director of the Center for Commercial Law. at the University of California San Francisco Hastings School of Law. Additionally, Nikolas Bowie ’14 and Anna Lvovsky ’13 have been promoted to law professors.

Together, the four professors strengthen Harvard Law School’s scholarship and teaching in a variety of areas, including criminal law and procedure, constitutional law and legal history, the federal judiciary, and corporate bankruptcy law.


Nicholas Bowie

Nikolas Bowie ’14, a scholar of constitutional law, local government law and legal history, will be promoted to professor of law at Harvard Law School. Bowie joined Harvard Law School as an assistant professor in 2018. He was previously a Reginald Lewis Law Teaching Fellow at Harvard, while completing a Ph.D. in history at Harvard University.

Ryan D Doerfler

Ryan D. Doerfler ’13, who focuses his research on critically examining the place of the federal judiciary in the American political and legal order, will join Harvard Law School as a professor of law. Doerfler is currently a professor of law at the University of Chicago, where he teaches in the areas of administrative law and legislation. From 2016 to 2019, he was an assistant professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania, and was a visiting assistant professor of law at Harvard in the fall of 2018.

Jared Elijah

A shot in the head of Jared Ellias

Jared Ellias, a bankruptcy law expert and corporate governance scholar, will join Harvard Law School as a professor of law. Ellias, who writes and teaches on corporate bankruptcy law and corporate governance, is currently the Bion M. Gregory Chair in Business Law and faculty director of the Center for Business Law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. He was the William Nelson Cromwell Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School in the fall of 2021.

Anna Lvovsky

Anna Lvovsky

Anna Lvovsky ’13 is being promoted to professor of law at Harvard Law School. An academic of criminal law and procedure, legal history, and evidence, she joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 2017. A legal historian, she received a Ph.D. in History of American Civilization from Harvard University in 2015.
