After being hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, Vergil Ortiz Jr. returns to action. The 24-year-old fighter will finally face Michael McKinnon on August 6. The fight will take place inside the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ortiz, a 2016 Gold Gloves silver medalist, made his pro debut that year. She defeated Antonio Orozco in 2019 to become the WBA Gold Welterweight Champion. In 2021, Ortiz faced former champion Maurice Hooker. He beat him by TKO to win the WBO International Welterweight title. His last fight was a TKO victory against former welterweight title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas in August.
McKinson made his professional debut in 2014. He won the WBO welterweight world title in March 2021 against Chris Kongo. “The Problem” last fought in March, defeating Alex Martin via unanimous decision.
A fight between the two was originally scheduled for March 19 before Ortiz was hospitalized. McKinson ended up going up against Martin.
